 How to Stuff a Stocking

Legend has it, that the tradition of holiday stockings began with a nobleman who, despondent over the loss of his wife, squandered his fortune, leaving his three daughters without dowries. St. Nicholas, hearing of this family’s plight, anonymously dropped three bags of gold coins down the chimney one night. The coins fortuitously landed in the sisters’ stockings that had been hung to dry near the fireplace. Now an entrenched tradition, Santa still graciously fills stockings of all types with small gifts, fruits, nuts.

Small kitchen gadgets are perfect little stocking stuffers! Here is our list of top picks -- those items that we seem to reach for time and again!

Two Stocking
Poach Pod
SILICONE POACH POD SET – For a perfectly cooked and easy to remove poached egg – simply crack your egg into the silicone pod as it floats in simmering water.
SILPAT BAKING MAT – A must-have for any home chef! Nothing sticks to it, so it saves time on prep and cleaning. Use for baking, roasting and more.
Silpat
Microplane
MICROPLANE ZESTER & GRATER – Just slide whole spices, nuts, garlic, ginger or citrus over the rasp of the microplane, and you have instant flavor.
Peeler
SWISS VEGETABLE PEELER – This is one of the best peelers on the market! The incredibly sharp carbon steel blade can be used with either hand.
STEMGEM STRAWBERRY HULLER – With just a twist of the StemGem, the stem pops right out. Perfect for desserts and salads. Easy and safe to use.
Stem Gem
Cheese Knife
THE BLACK CHEESE KNIFE – Nothing will stick to the Cheese Knife! Perfect for slicing through soft cheeses, boiled eggs, cake, and even butter with no residue.
Firewire
FIREWIRE FLEXIBLE GRILLING SKEWER – Bend and twist the Fire Wire however you'd like for effective use the space on your grill and a striking presentation. Set of two.
NONSTICK PARING KNIFE – A great versatile tool to have on hand. Lightweight and portable, this knife is great for camping, box lunches or picnics.
Paring Knife
lemon squeezer
ENAMELED LEMON SQUEEZER – Brighten someone’s day with freshly squeezed juice. Only three quick steps for pure juice, without seeds or pulp.
Can Opener
ROSLE CAN OPENER – Works along the rim of the can, so there are no sharp edges, and you can use the removed top as a lid to reseal the food.
GARLIC PEELER – Peel garlic in seconds with no odor left on your hands. Just pop the cloves into the tube and roll. Easy to clean and colorful.
Garlic Peeler
Slotted Turner
LAMSON SLOTTED TURNER – A professional-quality turner! Strong enough to handle almost any task, and flexible enough for delicate items like fish and eggs.
 Gifting Well

Gift PackGift Cards – With a Kitchen Window Gift Card, it’s one size fits all! Our gift cards are always welcome in our store, on our website, in our cooking school and even in our event center. Gift cards are available in any denomination. For an extra special touch, consider our Gift Card Gift Pack – for an additional fee, you can package your gift card in a decorative gift box with a class catalog and a silicone spatula.

Gifts of Experience – The “gift of experience” is an increasingly popular gift. Our cooking classes are perfect gifts for someone who likes to learn and eat at the same time! You’ll find details about upcoming classes at the store or on our website.

Thanks for Shopping Locally – Shopping locally has a dramatic effect within our community. For every dollar spent at a local, independent retailer like ours, an extra quarter stays in the community compared to businesses with ownership outside of our community. Thank you for your patronage of our small, locally owned business.

 Smart Holiday Tips

Thank YouTip #1: When you’re a guest, a small hostess gift is always appropriate. A unique food gift of gourmet jellies and jams, artfully packaged baking mixes, specialty jarred sauces, or other pantry items will help to replenish your host’s pantry. Etiquette experts recommend that if you choose to give your host flowers, have them sent the day before. Flowers in your hand as you arrive at the occasion may be disruptive to the moment requiring the host to search for a vase and fetch water.

Tip #2: At your New Year’s celebration there are a few etiquette points to consider when toasting the season: (1) Stand and speak clearly, (2) Make sure everyone has a full glass of something, (3) Keep it short – 60 seconds or less, (4) Allow the host to offer the first toast, (5) Toast, don’t roast.

Tip #3: Serve champagne or sparkling wine chilled to between 43-48°F. It takes about three hours to adequately chill a bottle in a refrigerator. Keep the bubbly chilled with an ice bucket filled with ice. To open a bottle of champagne, remove the foil, loosen the wire cage, but do not remove. Using a towel, hold one end over the cork and wire cage, and the other end at the base of the bottle. Angle the bottle at a 45-degree angle to allow maximum surface area for bubble release. Turn the base of the bottle and ease the bottle away from the cork. An ideal opening produces only a whisper of noise and avoids any dramatic spray.

 Holiday Q & A
Q&A

Q: How can I avoid streaks and spots on my stemware and glassware?
A:
Wash fine stemware by hand in warm water with a mild detergent. Adding a small amount of vinegar will counteract hard water spots. Rinse with warm water and gently dry with 100% woven cotton dishtowels that have been laundered without fabric softener or dryer sheets. The action and detergents of automatic dishwashers are often too harsh for fine glassware and will dull their finish over time.

Holiday Table SceneQ: The holiday dinner takes hours to plan and prepare, then seems to be over in 15 minutes. How can I stretch out the moment?
A:
The holiday meal deserves savoring and lingering. There are several things you can do to facilitate greater enjoyment. First, talk to key members of your family – let them know your expectations and your “vision” for the mealtime. Second, choose your menu so that you are not in the kitchen while the others are busy eating. Third, serve your meal leisurely in courses. By separating the food into discrete courses, everyone will naturally slow down and get into a “savoring” mindset.

Q: The holiday food that I prepare tastes great, how can I jazz up the presentation?
A:
We begin eating with our eyes. Culinary creations are always enhanced with the right serving dish and appropriate garnishes. The appropriate serving dish should fit the character of food, and should harmonize with your buffet or table settings. A colorful garnish for the December holiday table might include a bunch of fresh dill with a few cranberries, or sprigs of rosemary and scattered pomegranate seeds. A sprinkle of ground or slivered nuts can quickly accent the presentation of a vegetable dish.

You’ve Got It Made: Deliciously Easy Meals to Make Now and Bake Later by Diane Phillips. Published by Harvard Common Press, Boston, MA. Copyright 2008.

Cookbook:
You've Got It Made by Diane Phillips

No matter what time of year it is, when we know there is a busy “crunch time” ahead, we call upon the Diva of Do-Ahead, Diane Phillips. Ms. Phillips has perfected the art of serving great food effortlessly with her do-ahead strategies. Through her research, she has identified what foods freeze well, or will keep waiting in the refrigerator without affecting the final taste or appearance.

This book focuses on wholesome, everyday meals that are ready for those busier days when time is at a premium. She begins with an explanation of general do-ahead strategies, then applies those principles to appetizers, pasta and grain bakes, hot dishes, main dishes for meat, poultry, and seafood. Side dishes and desserts round out the book. The recipes presented, while streamlined and staged, focus on maximum flavor. Once you become familiar with Ms. Phillips’ do-ahead mindset, you’ll quickly become a pro at thinking ahead and being ready for each day, or for easy entertaining now and all year long.

Our Favorite Artichoke and Spinach Dip
View & Print

We love hot dips and spreads this time of year! They easily make the appetizer hour an upgraded affair. And, we especially love artichoke dips. This variation is easy to assemble and tastes great! We recommend making a double batch and freezing several containers. You’ll be ready for company anytime!

Artichoke and Spinach Dip

Tarragon Chicken Bake
View & Print

Calling upon a classic French combination, tarragon, mustard, and cream, this do-ahead casserole is great for the family or for company. Resting on a bed of noodles, sautéed chicken breasts are covered in a sauce that transforms ordinary ingredients into an extraordinary delicious entrée. Paired with a green salad, dinner is ready!

Golden Brioche Loaves

Chocolate Lava Cakes
View & Print

Who doesn’t love a chocolate dessert? These nearly flourless cakes are baked in individual ramekins and hold a secret center of melted chocolate. We took Ms. Phillips’ advice and served it in a puddle of fresh raspberry puree, then crowned it with a dollop of whipped cream. Having this elegant, yet easy, dessert in the freezer, ready to go at a moment’s notice, is a host’s dream.
